If nothing else, the fate that has befallen Sri Lankan housemaid Rizana Nafeek should serve as an eye opener to the authorities as to how unsafe and vulnerable a sizeable population of Sri Lanka's migrant workers are, particularly the unskilled labour group known as housemaids.
Nafeek's individual story highlights the many issues that Sri Lanka as a country that is dependent on the foreign exchange earned through the migrant labour force should take into account. There is no need to over-emphasise the fact that Sri Lanka sends cheap, unskilled labour and the country getting classified by international survey groups as a "high death risk" country.
