Something you all need to get straight. The people who are criticizing newspaper editors who killed an "Opus" comic strip because it poked fun at Islam and might have offended Muslims - they are the "right-wing thought police."

Those who celebrate such "voluntary" censorship? They are simply supporting good editorial judgment.

That was the argument I heard advanced on national television last week. And I have to say I was impressed at the Orwellian skill of the Muslim making the argument.

Everybody who is rational has understood for decades that the term "thought police" applies to those who use their power to crush freedom of expression. The thought police are all about preventing people from saying or publishing things, not urging that people be allowed to say, or write, or draw what they wish, even if it offends some people.

But now, we are told with a straight face, it is just the opposite. Up is down. Black is white. Right is left.

There was another well-established propaganda technique in play as well - repetition. The man said "right-wing thought police" in almost every sentence he spoke. He must be a good student of Joseph Goebbels and Vladimir Lenin, those energetic defenders of personal and press freedom who observed that if you tell a lie often enough, people start to believe it is true.
