CHRISTMAS celebrations are an obstacle to better community relations in multi-cultural Britain, Labour’s favourite think tank will warn ministers today.
A report from the Institute for Public Policy Research - which has close ties with Downing Street - says the festive season should be put on an equal footing with the festivals of other religions, including Diwali and Eid.
And it also calls for Christian elements to be stripped from the Monarchy, Parliament and the honours system to “foster a sense of shared values.”
The controversial recommendations come in a report called “The Power of Belonging: Identity, Citizenship and Community Cohesion” published by the think tank today.
But news of the proposals provoked anger among senior Tories and Christian groups last night. Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, the Shadow Community Cohesion Minister, said: ìGordon Brownís favoured think tankís advisers have clearly lost the plot.
“Their comments betray a breathtaking misunderstanding of what it is to be British. “These proposals could actually damage community cohesion.”
The report argues that multi-cultural policies have a “fundamental value” and need to be promoted by Government and town halls. It calls for greater “even-handedness” to “provide public recognition to minority cultures and religions.”
“If we are going to continue as a nation to mark Christmas - and it would be very hard to expunge it from our national life even if we wanted to - then public organisations should mark other major religious festivals too,” the report says. The authors admit that “community cohesion and norms of citizenship and solidarity are under pressure” in modern Britain.
