Family 'failed to help beaten woman'

Here's another look into Muslim family "life".

Family 'failed to help beaten woman'
The family of a man who beat his wife to death must have known what was happening to the young woman in the Leeds house where they all lived, a court has been told. A jury heard how Shazad Khan, 25, caused his new wife Sabia Rani, 19, horrendous injuries when he attacked her on a number of occasions at their home in Leeds.

After she died in May 2006, Ms Rani was found to have bruising to 90% of her body and had up to 15 broken ribs. Her injuries were described in court as being similar to those suffered by someone in a serious road accident.

Khan was found guilty of murdering his wife a year ago at Leeds Crown Court.

On Monday his mother, Phullan Bibi, 52, two of his sisters, Uzma Khan, 23, and 28-year-old Nazia Naureen, and Naureen's husband, Majid Hussain, also 28, went on trial accused of failing to do anything to help Ms Rani.

All four deny a charge of allowing the death of a vulnerable adult.

Khan and Hussain also deny committing perjury at the murder trial last year.

Simon Myerson QC, prosecuting, told the court how medical evidence showed Ms Rani must have been in severe pain and very ill in the weeks before her death.

But Mr Myerson said the four defendants, who all lived in the same house in Oakwood Grange, Roundhay, in Leeds, did not help her.

He said Ms Rani was brought up in rural Pakistan, did not speak English, only came to England five months before she died and was not allowed out of the house without a member of her husband's family.
