Thirty dead in Somalia mosque bombings

At least 30 people have been killed after two bombs exploded at a mosque in the Somalian capital Mogadishu on Saturday.

A high-ranking member of Somalia's most powerful militia, who was inside the mosque during the blast, is believed to be the target of the attack.

Officials said that at least 30 people, mostly worshippers awaiting noon prayers, were killed and 70 others were inured.

Witnesses claim the Abdalla Shideye mosque, in Mogadishu's main market, was hit by two separate explosions.

Businessman, Isma’il Dahir said: “The first one occurred at the back of the mosque and the other one at the front. I saw the dead bodies of at least 11 people and 18 injured,”

“The blood stained the walls and human flesh was scattered everywhere.”

It is believed Fuad Mohamed Kalaf, a prominent member of Islamist al-Shabab militia, was injured in the attack.

Kalaf, who recently had his assets frozen by the US for suspected links to terrorism, gives speeches at the mosque every Saturday.

Scores of al-Shabab militants cordoned off the area after the attack, which the group's spokesman Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage, blamed on the work of “foreign security companies".

Al-Shabab effectively rule over large swathes of southern Somalia while the country's UN backed government increasingly struggles to maintain control.

Although they are credited with improving security, the militia have raised serious concerns among human rights groups and Western leaders for their hard-line adherence to Sharia law, including executions and amputations, and their links to al-Qaida.

Somalia has been in a state of perpetual civil unrest since 1991.
